Environmental Advocates of New York
Environmental Advocates of New York is your government watchdog, serving the people of New
York as an effective and aggressive advocate on nearly every important state environmental
issue. Through advocacy, coalition building, citizen education and policy development, we
work to safeguard public health and preserve our unique natural heritage. We reach beyond
New York's borders to advance multi-state and national initiatives that have an impact on
New York's environment and are the New York State affiliate of the National Wildlife
Federation (NWF).
Through our Air and Energy Program, Environmental Advocates works for cleaner and healthier
air for all New Yorkers. Because energy use - including electricity, transportation, and
heating - is the most significant source of the air pollution that causes smog, acid rain,
global warming, and other problems, our Air and Energy Program focuses on reducing
pollution from energy use and promoting the clean technologies that will bring a
sustainable energy future.
Environmental Advocates' Air & Energy Program has successfully pushed for a renewable
energy mandate for NY. We made sure NY matched California's strict standards for car
pollution. We effectively lobbied for an increase in NY's investment in conservation and
efficiency programs. We pressed NY to take action on global warming and reduce the
pollution from outdated power plants. And while we've had much success, there is more to
be done. NY needs to cap carbon dioxide pollution from power plants, set strict mercury
standards, reform power plant siting, and redouble conservation efforts. Environmental
Advocates won't rest until every New Yorker breathes clean air every day.
